Urodynamic testing

Uroflowmetry measures how you pass urine. It records how fast the urine flows, how much comes out and how long it takes. You simply urinate into a special device. A computer then turns your stream into a flow curve that shows the speed of every second from start to finish. At Oberig Clinic in Kyiv the test runs on a computerized urodynamic system in the urology unit. A urologist reads the result and explains the numbers right away.

What it shows and who needs it

The test shows flow speed, voided volume and the pattern of the stream. It also tells the doctor how well the bladder muscle (detrusor) and the sphincter work together. Men usually come with a weak or stop-start stream. Others get up at night again and again or feel the bladder never empties. These are typical signs of an enlarged prostate or a narrowed urethra. Women need the test when they leak urine on coughing or laughing, feel sudden strong urges or have to run to the toilet far too often during the day and at night. Children are referred for bedwetting and other voiding problems.

Uroflowmetry is the first and simplest step. Is the picture still unclear? Is surgery planned? Then the urologist orders a full urodynamic study. It includes cystometry (bladder pressure during filling), a pressure-flow study and electromyography of the pelvic floor muscles. It shows the type of incontinence and its cause. How to prepare

• Drink 0.5-1 liter of water or tea 1-2 hours before your visit.
• Do not empty your bladder before the test. Come with a comfortably full bladder.
• If the doctor asked, keep a bladder diary for 2-3 days (times and volumes).
• Bring earlier tests, ultrasound reports and a list of your medicines.

Do not overfill. A stretched bladder squeezes weaker. The result then looks worse than it really is.

What happens during the test

You go into a private cubicle. You urinate into a funnel on the device, just like a normal toilet. Men stand, women sit. A sensor records every milliliter per second. The recording itself takes less than a minute. Right after that the doctor checks with ultrasound how much urine is left in the bladder. Read more on the kidney and bladder ultrasound page. A full study with catheters takes 30-60 minutes. You lie down for it. The catheters are very thin.

Normal results for women and men

A normal curve looks like a bell. The flow builds up fast and then fades smoothly. The doctor reads both the numbers and the shape of the curve. Below are rough values for adults. Your doctor makes the final call based on age, symptoms and voided volume.

Frequently asked questions

Does it hurt?

No. Uroflowmetry is completely painless. You just pass urine. A catheter in the full study may feel uncomfortable for a moment.

What if I can't go?

Nerves often get in the way, and that is perfectly normal in an unfamiliar room with a doctor waiting outside. Drink some more water and wait. You can repeat the test the same day.

Do I need a referral?

A urologist usually orders the test. You can start with a consultation. The doctor will decide how much testing you need.
