Tumors of the lateral ventricle of the brain are extremely rare neoplasms, which occur with a frequency of 0.81-1.6% of all other types of brain tumors. They include a diverse range of benign, malignant tumors and cystic neoplasms. There are true intraventricular tumors arising from the walls of the ventricle or other structures of the lateral ventricle, as well as secondary tumors of the lateral ventricles, which originate from neighboring structures and, growing, penetrate into the lateral ventricle of the brain.
Tumors of the lateral ventricle of the brain are neoplasms of various histological variants, but the most common among them are astrocytomas, ependymomas, oligodendrogliomas, choroid plexus papillomas, and meningiomas.
The appearance of symptoms of tumors of the lateral ventricle of the brain is associated with an increase in its size, when it causes occlusion of the cerebrospinal tract. The clinical picture manifests itself in the form of hypertensive-hydrocephalic syndrome, changes in the fundus, epileptic seizures, intellectual and cognitive disorders and general brain symptoms. Hydrocephalic changes in the lateral ventricles threaten the occurrence of lethal hemorrhage from significantly expanded full-blooded subependymal veins and veins of the choroid plexus. In addition, an occlusive crisis with respiratory arrest and death may develop suddenly.
Diagnosis involves CT and/or MRI of the brain with contrast.
In the treatment of tumors of the lateral ventricles of the brain, neurosurgery is usually the first step, followed by adjuvant radiation therapy and/or chemotherapy. Microsurgical and endoscopic technologies are used during neurosurgical intervention, because surgical access to the lateral ventricles is one of the most difficult in neurosurgical practice.
In the Neurosurgery Center of the Oberig Clinic, headed by an experienced neurosurgeon with 26 years of experience, Doctor of Medicine, Honored Doctor of Ukraine, Professor Andriy Oleksandrovich Danchyn, patients with the most complex neurosurgical pathology can receive specialized care at the level of the best international standards.
