Breast ultrasound for men and children

Breast ultrasound for men and children
About direction
About direction

Ultrasound shows what exactly has made the breast bigger: gland tissue, fat, a cyst or a lump. It is painless, has no radiation and needs no prep. Adult men and children of any age can have it. At Oberig Clinic the scan is done by ultrasound doctors of the Diagnostic Department, and a breast specialist can see you right away if needed.

When you need it

In men the most common cause is gynecomastia, a growth of gland tissue behind the nipple. It shows up in teens during puberty, in older age, with hormone changes, liver or thyroid disease, and after some medicines, hormones and steroids. Ultrasound tells true gynecomastia from pseudogynecomastia, where the breast is bigger only because of fat. That decides if you need hormone tests and treatment. Read more about the causes on the gynecomastia page.

Watch out for a hard lump on one side, a pulled-in nipple, nipple discharge or swollen lymph nodes in the armpit. Don't wait with these. You need an ultrasound and a breast specialist.

Children get the scan for breast swelling in a newborn that lasts several weeks, early breast growth in girls under 8, a lump behind the nipple in teenage boys, after an injury, or with redness and pain.

How the scan goes

No prep needed. You lie on your back. The doctor applies gel and checks both breasts, the area behind the nipple and the armpit lymph nodes. It takes 10-15 minutes. The doctor explains the result right away. You can take it to a mammologist or an endocrinologist.

The report says on which side gland tissue is present and how much, its size in millimeters, its structure, any cysts or lumps, and the state of the lymph nodes. These numbers let the doctor compare results a few months later and see if the growth is shrinking.

Children are examined with a parent in the room. It doesn't hurt. The gel is just a little cool.

Frequently asked questions

Is gynecomastia dangerous?

Usually not by itself. But the cause has to be found. Sometimes it is a hormone problem or a side effect of a medicine.

Does breast swelling in a teenage boy go away?

In most boys, yes, within 6 months to 2 years. Ultrasound confirms it is a normal age-related change.

Do men need a mammogram?

Rarely. Ultrasound comes first. A breast specialist orders a mammogram if something looks suspicious.
