MR-Cholangiography

MR-Cholangiography

Magnetic resonance cholangiography (MR cholangiography) is a non-invasive, non-contrast examination of the gallbladder and intrahepatic bile and pancreatic ducts. The examination is performed to assess the patency of the ducts, visualize neoplasms (tumors, cysts, stones, developmental anomalies of the gallbladder, bile ducts, etc.). To obtain the most informative result, it is important to follow certain preparation rules.

What do you need to know before starting the examination?

MRI examination is performed for medical reasons and by referral from a doctor. If you have data from previous CT or MRI examinations (conclusion, digital media), give them to the radiologist.

! If you have ascites (fluid in the abdominal cavity), please provide the information to the radiologist.

The presence of any foreign objects in the patient's body that contain metal (for example, metal clips on blood vessels, fixators, piercings, braces, implanted hip and knee joints, metal and magnetic implants, foreign metal bodies (such as, for example, bullet fragments), metal hair extensions, eyelashes, etc., be sure to warn the medical staff before the examination and provide the passport of the product installed in you to the radiologist.

ATTENTION! If you have a brace system (orthodontic structure on your teeth to correct your bite), in order to perform MRI cholangiography, you must first remove the metal wire that holds the braces together, as there is a risk of getting burns to the oral mucosa. After the MRI, the metal wire that holds the braces together must be returned to its place by your dentist.

If you have an implanted artificial cardiac pacemaker, the examination cannot be performed;

On electronic implants in ear canal, first give the product passport to the radiologist;

Before the examination, you must remove your watch, jewelry, metal objects, removable dentures, remove all metal objects (keys, coins, etc.), electronic devices, magnetic media from your pockets. Remove jewelry and items in the individual locker provided to you.

Preparation for the examination

The day before the examination (1 day):

  • A light dinner no later than 19:00. It is recommended to avoid fatty, fried foods, products that cause gas formation (legumes, cabbage, black bread, carbonated drinks).
  • Take enterosorbents to reduce gas formation - as recommended by your doctor.

On the day of the examination:

  • If you have problems with digestion or flatulence, tell your doctor about this - he may recommend taking additional medications (for example, enzymes or antispasmodics).
  • The examination is performed on an empty stomach, so you should not eat or drink for at least 3-4 hours before the examination. This is especially important for clear visualization of the bile ducts.
  • Do not take caffeine or nicotine on the day of the examination.
  • Take the medication prescribed by your doctor - only with a small amount of water (check with your doctor).

ATTENTION! For MR cholangiography, you must have two bananas with you. As instructed by the X-ray technician, you will have to eat them at a certain point in the examination to reduce image artifacts from the liquid contents of the stomach, which worsen the quality of the examination.
