The boy Fares is only 6 months old. During the routine vaccination, the pediatrician noticed a yellowish tinge to the baby's skin. Further examination showed that the child had biliary atresia. This is a rare birth defect in which the bile ducts are underdeveloped. The only salvation is a liver transplant.
Fares' parents are Sudanese. After learning about their son's diagnosis, they looked for a transplant and went to Indian and European medical centers. Eventually they stopped at the Oberig clinic. They say they were shocked that operations of this level are being carried out in Ukraine. On July 16, our doctors performed a liver transplant from dad to baby.
2-year-old Vanya from Kharkiv was admitted to the Oberig clinic in serious condition. Prior to that, the boy was taken to the intensive care unit several times. His diagnosis is cryptogenic cirrhosis of the liver. The word "cryptogenic" means that the cause of the disease is unknown. It was decided not to postpone the transplant, because the expectation could be fatal for the baby. The operation was performed on July 23, the donor, as for Fares, was my father. This is the sixth transplant performed at the Liver Surgery Center of the Oberig Clinic.
