Epidermoid cysts of the brain are intracranially located benign neoplasms, the share of which is no more than 1% of all neoplasms of the brain. They are characterized by slow growth, an asymptomatic course until the moment when the cyst begins to cause an increase in intracranial pressure and squeeze the neighboring structures of the brain.
In the vast majority of cases, epidermoid cysts of the brain are congenital defects, and they arise during the development of the fetus in the mother's womb. They originated from the remains of skin cells and can be located in any part of the brain. Inside, as a rule, these cysts are filled with waxy contents of desquamated keratin derivatives and cholesterol crystals, and have a thin capsule represented by a layer of flat epithelium.
More often, epidermoid cysts are located intradurally (in 90%): in the bridge-cerebral angle, supracellular cistern, fourth ventricle, middle cranial fossa, interhemispheric fissure, rarely - in the spinal cord. 10% of epidermoid cysts account for extradural localizations.
Clinical symptoms of epidermoid cysts of the brain can be different and depend on the location and size of the cyst. The main symptoms may include:
Diagnosis of epidermoid cysts involves computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
Treatment of epidermoid cysts is surgical removal of the cyst, when the bones of the skull are destroyed by the cyst, cranioplasty is performed simultaneously with the replacement of the defect with a titanium plate. The best results of surgical intervention for deeply located epidermoid cysts are provided by minimally invasive endoscopic methods of surgical intervention.
