Hemangioblastoma of the brain is a rare benign tumor that originates in the vascular system of the brain. Hemangioblastoma contains cystic and solid components. This cyst is usually large and has tumor cells on its walls, which are well visualized on MRI with contrast.
Hemangioblastomas have a special growth pattern — they tend to grow to large sizes, which causes compression of surrounding tissues and structures. Hemangioblasts contain blood vessels that can be very fragile and prone to bleeding.
The causes of hemangioblastoma are unknown. Hemangioblastomas of the brain arise as a result of abnormal growth of vascular cells in the brain. As with many neoplasms, general adverse environmental factors, bad habits and burdened heredity, as well as some congenital genetic diseases, such as Von Hippel-Lindau syndrome, which promotes the development of tumors in various organs, have a negative impact.
The most frequent localization of hemangioblastoma is in the cerebellar hemispheres. Also, hemangioblastomas can develop in other parts of the brain (cerebral cortex, brain stem, spinal cord). Hemangioblastoma can be unilateral or located in both hemispheres of the brain.

Neurosurgical treatment involves removing not so much the cystic part as the solid part of the hemangioblastoma. During the operation, it is mandatory to remove the wall tumor cells. Since hemangioblastoma can be located in the deep structures of the brain and have large sizes, surgical intervention requires a highly qualified neurosurgeon and experience in similar surgical interventions. Sometimes interventional angiography is used to reduce the risk of bleeding during surgery. Radical removal leads to complete recovery.
The most complex neurosurgical interventions are performed in the Neurosurgery Center of the "Oberig" clinic. The center is headed by a neurosurgeon, Doctor of Medicine, Honored Doctor of Ukraine, Professor Andrii Oleksandrovych Danchyn.
