Oligodendrogliomas are a type of intracerebral tumors belonging to gliomas (brain tumors that develop from glial cells). Oligodendrogliomas are tumors of a low degree of malignancy, but anaplastic oligodendroglioma occurs, which has a higher degree of malignancy. Among oligodendrogliomas, the primary tumor with a high degree of malignancy is oligoastrocytoma, a mixed tumor that grows rapidly and often metastasizes within the brain. It also has a tendency to transform into glioblastoma, an aggressive brain tumor.
Frequent localization of oligodendrogliomas is in the frontal lobes of the cerebral hemispheres.
The clinical picture of oligodendrogliomas is characterized by the presence of epileptic seizures (the main symptom in 50-80% of cases) and convulsions. Other symptoms are non-specific and are associated with an increase in the size of the tumor, as well as an increase in intracranial pressure (headache, psychopathology, vertigo, nausea).
In the diagnosis of oligodendrogliomas of the brain, the main methods are MRI of the brain with contrast, CT / spiral CT.
With oligodendrogliomas, as with all intracerebral tumors, the entire arsenal of antitumor treatment methods is used, but surgical removal of the tumor precedes other methods (chemotherapy, radiation). The radicality of tumor removal determines the prognosis in terms of quality and length of life: the more radical the removal, the better the prognosis. The use of combined methods (radiation therapy, chemotherapy) improves survival and the average life expectancy of patients.
Mini-invasive endoscopic neurosurgical technologies, combined with microsurgical techniques, make it possible to eliminate tumors of any localization and ensure the maximum possible volume of tumor resection without the occurrence of a gross neurological deficit in the patient in the postoperative period.
Treatment of oligodendrogliomas is a complex task and requires the coordinated work of a multidisciplinary team — a neurosurgeon, radiation therapist, chemotherapist, pathologist, neurologist, and, if necessary, neurorehabilitation specialists. At the "Oberig" clinic, our team has a successful experience of helping patients with brain tumors, so we advise you to contact us for help.
