Extracranial tumors of the soft tissues of the head are malignant or benign neoplasms that grow in the soft tissues of the face, neck, and other parts of the head, outside the cranial cavity. Some of the newly formed soft tissues of the head consist of metastatic lesions of intra- and extracranially located tumors.
The frequency of spread of extracranial soft tissue tumors of the head
Extracranial soft tissue tumors of the head are far from the most common pathology among other neoplasms; the frequency of benign relative to the frequency of malignant (sarcoma) is 100:1. Malignant tumors of soft tissues (not only the head) make up approximately 1% of all malignant neoplasms in adults and 10-15% in children. The frequency of malignant neoplasms of soft tissues (sarcoma) increases with age and is slightly higher than the frequency of occurrence in men. In adults, undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma and liposarcoma are more often diagnosed, followed by synovial sarcoma and leiomyosarcoma. Of the total number of soft tissue tumors, the head and neck area accounts for approximately 10% of cases.
Causes and risk factors of extracranial tumors of the soft tissues of the head
The etiology of primary extracranial soft tissue tumors of the head has not been studied and in most cases is a sporadic phenomenon. Risk factors for the occurrence of extracranial tumors of the soft tissues of the head include common unfavorable factors:
Clinical symptoms:
Symptoms of extracranial soft tissue tumors of the head may include:
Patients with extracranial tumors of the soft tissues of the head may complain of pain, increase in the size of the formation, impaired facial function, and other symptoms associated with damage to nerves and tissues.
Diagnosis of extracranial soft tissue tumors of the head
Diagnosis of extracranial tumors of the soft tissue of the head is carried out with the help of X-ray, MRI and/or CT examination to determine the size and structure of the tumor. To determine the type of tumor, a biopsy is performed with subsequent examination.
Treatment
Treatment of extracranial soft tissue tumors of the head involves, first of all, surgical intervention. In the case of malignant nature of the tumor, the patient is subsequently referred for radiation, chemotherapeutic or combined treatment.
Highly specialized care - from diagnostics to all types of treatment (surgical, radiation, chemotherapy) for extracranial tumors of the soft tissues of the head is available at the "Obereg" clinic (Kyiv) - a medical institution that meets world standards of medical care.
