Radiation therapy of brain tumors and foci of metastatic lesions is possible on linear accelerators of modern generations, equipped with multi-blade collimators and modern software for carrying out treatment with modulated radiation intensity (special plates that open at a certain programmed time). .
Thanks to innovative design inventions, advanced digital solutions, modern linear accelerators have made radiation treatment of brain tumors of any size and location possible.
Radiation therapy for brain tumors can be used as an independent method of radical treatment, as well as in combination with surgery and chemotherapy.
Treatment of primary brain tumors has stages in treatment. The first stage is surgical removal of the tumor or biopsy of the tumor, the second stage is radiation therapy of the tumor and/or the bed of the removed tumor, which can be combined (if necessary) with chemotherapy. In the case of brain gliomas of a high degree of malignancy (for example, anaplastic astrocytoma, glioblastoma), the combination of radiation therapy and chemotherapy after surgery significantly increases the overall survival of patients. The duration of radiation treatment is 5-6 weeks for most cases.
In the case of metastatic brain damage, the possibility of performing stereotaxic radiosurgery is first of all considered. Stereotaxic radiosurgery is a radical method of radiation therapy with high efficiency. The duration of treatment is 1-5 days. If it is impossible to perform radiosurgery, it is possible to carry out fractionated radiation therapy using several methods. For example, a modern technique is irradiation of the whole brain with the exception of the hippocampus (HA-WBRT) and an integrated boost for metastatic formations. This technique makes it possible to significantly reduce cognitive dysfunctions and increase local control over metastases compared to classical irradiation of the whole brain. The duration of such treatment is 10-15 days.
The TrueBeam STx linear accelerator installed in the radiation therapy center of the Obereg Universal Clinic allows patients with brain neoplasms to undergo both stereotaxic radiosurgery and fractionated radiotherapy with high accuracy and safety for healthy tissues.
Radiotherapy for brain tumors and brain metastases prolongs life and improves its quality.
With the appearance of new metastatic foci in the brain, it is possible to conduct a repeated course of radiation therapy, which is also a positive factor in the life expectancy of patients with secondary brain damage.
