pH-Impedance measurement

pH-impedancemetry is the "gold" standard in the diagnosis of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and a unique method of examination that determines the regurgitation of stomach contents into the esophagus.

Indications for carrying out:

1) suspicion of GERD in persons with extraesophageal symptoms, such as pain behind the sternum, sore throat, chronic hoarseness, laryngitis, chronic cough

2) ineffectiveness of the treatment of typical GERD or evaluation of the effectiveness of the drug

3) selection for surgical intervention

4) evaluation of the effectiveness of surgical treatment

5) significant belching

6) detection of other esophageal diseases (functional disorder, esophageal hypersensitivity, etc.) with persistent symptoms.

Contraindications to the study:

- a strong vomiting reflex

- tumors and ulcers of the esophagus

- varicose and dilated veins of the esophagus

- surgery on the esophagus, stomach, chest cavity, performed less than 12 months ago;

- bleeding from the esophagus or a high risk of its development;

- the presence of burns, strictures and diverticula in the esophagus

- aneurysm of the aorta

- severe forms of hypertension and IXC

- obstruction of the nasopharynx

- severe maxillofacial injuries

- severe forms of coagulopathy

- mental illnesses.

Attention! To carry out an impedance-pH study, it is necessary:

- referral to a gastroenterologist or endoscopist, ECG results (not older than 1 month) and esophagogastroduodenoscopy data - EGDS (not older than 12 months).

Conducting an pH-impedance study:

- Before the procedure, you will be asked to fill out the document "Informed Consent". Read it carefully and make sure that you have asked all your questions to the doctor conducting the study.

- The research is carried out intranasally. A catheter with an electrode inserted through the nose is installed for 24 hours. The electrode is connected to a portable battery-powered recorder that determines the pH value every 4-6 seconds.

- During the procedure, you need to keep a diary, where you will note all meals, as well as all the symptoms that arise, periods of staying in bed (horizontal position of the body), regardless of whether these periods coincide with sleep or not.

- The study itself lasts a day, then you come to the Clinic, where the probe is removed and the procedure is deciphered based on the results of the study.
